about

They’ve come out for their granddaughter’s wedding. It’s been a beautiful day. They’re the last ones on the dance floor, despite their frailty. They hold each other up, their combined strength so much greater than the sum of their parts. Even though their moves are by necessity small and steady they still part the carpet of balloons like the dawn dissolving fog. The band, secretly relieved to shed the shackles of Sex On Fire and Wonderwall, have risen to the occasion and are delicately shimmering their way through Glenn Miller’s Moonlight Serenade.

The room is mesmerised. Their closeness and completion speaks of everything, as if they appeared to be a 2D image, but when observed side on revealing metres of rainbow hued granite, that at once communicates to the breath-holding family - branches reaching out in every direction - all the good and bad and pain and joy that they’ve been through, and how it ties them together in this circle of light…

lyrics

Noisy party
Lonely table
I watch you approaching me
Then you say

“Would you permit me the last dance this evening?
Please, ma’am, may I have the last dance this evening?”

Cheeks will colour
Coy and modest
I extend you a downturned hand
When you say

“Would you permit me the last dance this evening?
Please, ma’am, may I have the last dance this evening?”

The night is young
